What is Christmas in April?

Christmas in April is a community-based project dedicated to helping low-income and disabled homeowners across America live in warmth, safety, and independence through volunteer repair and renovation of owner occupied homes.

This annual program brings volunteers and beneficiaries together in the tradition of an old-fashioned "barn raising". All hands-on work takes place in April, with the project culminating in an all-out, one-day effort by both skilled and non-skilled volunteers to complet the renovations. It is neighbor helping neighbor, people helping people.

When did the Program Begin?

Christmas in April began in Midland, Texas in 1972 founded by Bobbie and Shirley Trimble. In 1988 a national effort, headquartered in Washington, D.C., was initiated under the auspices of Christmas in April*USA. The effort has spread "Christmas in April" to 480 cities and towns in 46 states rehabing 27,000 homes collectively; helping over 107,000 families with a dollar value of over 26 million. In 1999 alone 6,630 homes were rehabbed in cities and towns across America. The value of this work is over 85.9 million dollars.
